CONVERT VHS TO DVD

Don't lose special moments forever: Convert VHS now

Long lost family moments and memories could be sitting on an old VHS tape. That's ok, but did you know VHS tapes have a lifetime? In fact, they often begin to degrade after as little as 20 years. This means those memories could start to literally fade from view, and could eventually become unplayable altogether.

Luckily, there is a simple solution - Digital Converters can convert your tapes to digital formats quickly, easily and cheaply - meaning you can watch them, share them or even gift them to family and friends forever.

We convert VHS to digital in two simple steps, so you can rewatch those moments anytime, on your phone, laptop or TV. No more digging out the old player. No more worrying if the tape will still work.

We handle every type of tape there is, from Betamax to Super VHS, VHS-C, Mini DV, Hi8, Video8 and more. Got a different tape? Just ask - we may be able to convert that too.

What you can expect from us.

Your memories are irreplaceable - this is how we'll take care of them

We only use professional-grade equipment, which we keep well maintained, to get the best possible quality from your tapes.
Each tape goes through a careful process: we inspect it first and make any needed repairs. For VHS and VHS-C with mould, we clean them before transfer. After the initial transfer, we check the quality. If there are any issues, we'll transfer the tape again using different machines and settings, choosing the best version for your digital files.
Our success rate speaks for itself - around 95% of tapes are digitised with good picture quality, and over 99% of tapes are successfully transferred regardless of their condition.

FAQs

Q. Why should I convert old media to digital?
Old tapes, films and recordings naturally deteriorate over time, which can gradually reduce picture or sound quality and, in some cases, make the original media difficult or impossible to play. The equipment needed to play older formats is also becoming harder to find and maintain. Converting your old media to digital gives you a modern copy that is easier to watch, store, back up and share with family. Your converted files can be supplied on USB, DVD or through private online storage, depending on the type of media and how you would like to access it.
Q. How do you convert old media to digital?
We use professional playback and digital conversion equipment suited to each type of media we receive. Video tapes are played back using high-quality decks, while other formats use the appropriate specialist equipment for that source. The recording is then converted into a modern digital format.

Your converted media can be returned on USB, DVD or through private online storage, depending on the format and your chosen service. We also check older media for obvious playback problems and will do what we can to clean or repair items that need attention before conversion.
Q. Can I convert old tapes and media to digital myself?
Sometimes, but the results can vary considerably. Cheap USB converters and ageing home playback equipment can introduce picture problems, dropped frames, poor sound or unstable playback. Older tapes can also be fragile, so repeated attempts to play a damaged recording may make the problem worse. We use professional equipment and work with old media every day, which gives us a much better chance of getting the best possible result from the original.
Q. Can I play the converted files on my phone or smart TV?
Yes. Video conversions can be supplied as MP4 files, which work with most modern phones, tablets, computers and Smart TVs. You can receive these files on USB or through private online storage. DVD copies are also available for compatible video formats. If you specifically want tapes transferred onto USB, see our vhs to usb service.
Q. What types of old media can you convert?
We convert a wide range of old video, film and recording formats. This includes VHS to Digital, camcorder tapes to digital, VHS-C, Betamax and Cine Film, along with many other older media formats. If you're not sure what you've found, you can send us a photo or check the conversion options in the menu at the top of the website.
Q. My old media is over 30 years old - can it still be converted?
In many cases, yes. We regularly work with recordings that are several decades old. Condition matters more than age alone, so media that has been stored somewhere dry and relatively stable often converts well. Even if an item has deteriorated, we can frequently clean it, repair minor damage or adjust the playback equipment to recover as much of the original recording as possible.
Q. What kind of quality can I expect from digital conversion?
We aim to get the best practical picture and sound quality available from the original media. The final result will still be limited by the quality and condition of the source, so an old analogue recording will not suddenly look like modern HD or 4K footage. Professional playback equipment can, however, make a significant difference to stability, tracking, colour and sound compared with cheap home conversion equipment.
Q. What if my old tape or media is damaged?
We regularly deal with damaged old media, including snapped tapes, cracked cassette shells, tangled tape and even mouldy tapes. Repairs are handled manually using specialist tools and equipment. If an item can be made playable again, we'll do our best to recover the recording. Some badly damaged media cannot be recovered, so we'll contact you if we find a problem that prevents normal conversion.
Q. I found some unlabelled tapes - can you check what's on them?
Yes. Lots of customers send us old tapes without knowing exactly what they contain. We can convert the recordings so you can go through them digitally rather than trying to identify everything using old playback equipment at home. If a tape turns out to be blank, we'll return it to you without charging for a conversion.
Q. Will the sound be included when my old videos are converted?
Yes. If the original recording contains audio, we transfer that along with the picture. Our equipment is set up to reproduce the best available audio track from the original source. The quality will depend on the recording itself and the condition of the media, but the aim is always to retain the original sound as faithfully as possible.
Q. How do you deal with old tapes that have playback or tracking problems?
We use professional playback equipment that gives us much more control than most domestic machines. For formats such as VHS to Digital, this can include high-quality VCRs with features such as timebase correction to reduce problems including picture wobble, jitter and rolling lines. Different media formats require different equipment, so we use the setup best suited to the original recording.
Q. Can I get more than one copy of my converted media?
Yes. You can order additional USB sticks or DVDs where applicable, and digital files are easy to copy for family members or backups. Many customers use one copy for everyday viewing and keep another as a backup of important family recordings.
Q. What's the difference between USB, DVD and digital download?
USB gives you digital files that can be copied, backed up, edited and played on many computers, televisions and other modern devices. A digital download gives you similar files through private online storage, without needing a physical USB stick. DVD is useful if you prefer something that can be put directly into a DVD player. If you're converting videotapes, we offer both VHS to USB and a VHS to DVD option.
Q. Can I edit the files after my old media has been converted?
Yes. Once you receive your digital files, you can copy, organise and edit them however you like. Video files can be loaded into editing software so you can trim sections, add titles, combine recordings or create shorter family films. We also remove sections of video that contain nothing but a black screen with no audio.
Q. Do you improve old recordings or just make a digital copy?
Our priority is to produce a clean and stable digital copy without making the recording look artificial. We don't add fake sharpening or heavy filters. Instead, we use good playback equipment, clean media where appropriate and use the available hardware correction features to get the best result from the source. The final file still reflects the original recording, including any faults that are permanently recorded on it.
Q. Is it safe to send old tapes and media in the post?
Yes. Customers send us old family recordings from across the UK every day. We use Royal Mail Tracked 48 for return delivery, and items are logged when they arrive with us. We know many recordings are irreplaceable, so originals are handled carefully throughout the conversion process.
Q. Will you send my original media back after conversion?
Yes. Your original tapes, films and other media are returned after conversion along with any physical USB or DVD copies you've ordered. Return postage is sent using Royal Mail Tracked 48 and is fully insured. If we have carried out a repair to an item during the conversion process, we'll also let you know.
Q. Do I need to rewind or prepare my tapes before sending them?
No. You don't need to rewind tapes or do any special preparation before sending them to us. We'll handle that using the correct playback equipment here. In fact, if a tape is particularly old or hasn't been played for years, it can be better to leave it alone rather than putting it through an ageing home machine before sending it.
Q. How long does digital conversion take?
Turnaround depends mainly on the type and quantity of media you send. A single VHS to Digital, Cine Film or camcorder to digital conversion will usually take around one working day to process once we receive it. Larger collections can take one to two weeks. We'll keep you updated and email you when your order is ready.
Q. Can you convert tapes that were recorded abroad?
Yes. For compatible video formats, we can work with PAL, NTSC and SECAM recordings. This is useful if your old tapes were recorded overseas, bought abroad or sent to you by relatives in another country. We have multi-standard playback equipment that allows us to convert many of these recordings into modern digital files.
