Q. How do I convert old vhs tapes to DVD?
To convert VHS tapes to DVD, you need to follow these steps:

1. Acquire Equipment: You'll need a VHS player or VCR, a DVD recorder or DVD-R drive for your computer, and a blank DVD-R or DVD+R disc. These items can add up though, and make the process not very cost effective. You may find using our service makes a lot more sense!

2. Connect VCR to DVD Recorder: Using AV cables or S-video cables, connect the VCR's video and audio outputs to the DVD recorder's video and audio inputs.

3. Playback and Recording: Play the VHS tape on the VCR and simultaneously record it onto the DVD recorder. Follow the recorder's instructions for recording settings and quality options.

4. Finalise DVD: After recording, finalise the DVD, which makes it playable on most DVD players. Follow your DVD recorder's instructions for finalising.
Q. What is the difference between transferring VHS to DVD and VHS to other formats?
Converting to DVD involves transferring VHS content to a physical DVD disc by utilising a VHS player, computers and a DVD recorder (also known as a DVD burner), whereas our VHS to digital service (e.g., MP4, AVI) simply takes the recordings from the tapes and stores the content in a digital file format, either on a computer hard drive, in the cloud or on a USB memory stick. Q. What equipment do I need to convert VHS videotapes to DVD?
You'll need a VHS player or VCR, a DVD recorder to burn the video file to a DVD with (either standalone or built into your computer), AV cables or S-video cables to connect the devices, blank DVD-R or DVD+R discs, and a TV or monitor for playback and monitoring.
Q. Can you digitise damaged VHS tapes to DVD?
Yes, we can convert tapes with damaged video, but the resulting quality of the conversion will depend on the condition of the original tape. Some issues can be improved during the conversion process, but physical damage to the tape may result in artefacts being transferred to the converted version.
Q. Can I digitise VHS tapes with tracking issues to DVD?
Yes, we can fix the majority of tracking issues that occur with old video tapes. All of our machines are top end, professional grade models and are extremely well maintained, so perform better than normal, home-level VCRs, which are usually now very old and not working as well as they can be. If the tracking issues persist however, we will try multiple machines and different settings to attempt to fix the issue. In rare cases where the tape has been recorded completely out of alignment it might not be possible to fix, and the tracking issues will be present on the converted DVD. We will let you know in advance if this is the case.
Q. Can I convert copyrighted VHS tapes to DVD?
Technically, you can convert copyrighted VHS tapes for personal use, but you cannot distribute or share the content without permission, as it will violate UK copyright laws. This means we cannot convert a commercially released VHS videotape for you.
Q. Can you add labels or titles to the digitised videos on the DVD?
Yes, we can add titles to your DVD to make it easy for you to navigate the content of your old videotape on your DVD player.
Q. Can you edit the videos before transferring VHS tapes to DVD?
Yes, if attempting to convert at home, video capture software and DVD authoring tools often include basic editing features.

However, if using our VHS video tape to DVD service, you’ll benefit from professional level adjustments to ensure your original videos look better than ever.
Q. Can I play the DVDs on all DVD players?
Yes, the DVDs created from your VHS tapes are compatible with all standard DVD players, gaming consoles, cars with DVD head units, and computers with DVD drives.
Q. How long does video transfer to DVD take?
We have a turnaround time of around 7 days from when we receive your tapes.

If converting at home, conversion time varies depending on the length of the tape and the recording settings. It can range from real-time (1:1) for standard quality to longer for higher-fidelity conversions and editing.
Q. What are the benefits of converting VHS videotapes to DVD?
Converting VHS videos to DVD provides better longevity, makes it easier to watch as you can use more common modern devices, and then you also have the ability to organise, label, and enhance the original content on top. Additionally, many more people have a DVD driver or player now than old VHS cassette players.
Q. Can you enhance the audio quality during video conversion to DVD?
Yes, we use professional audio software to enhance the audio fidelity, remove noise, and adjust audio levels of your original home videos to make sure what you get back on DVD is a better version of what you sent to us.
Q. Can I digitise VHS tapes with subtitles to DVD?
Yes, subtitles (or closed captions) on VHS videotapes are hardcoded into the video signal and therefore will always be retained during the conversion process, making them accessible on the DVD. They of course cannot then be turned off when you are watching your new DVD version!
Q. Can you enhance the video quality during the process?
Yes, we use professional video software to enhance the video quality, remove any long sections of blank video, and adjust contrast and saturation levels (among other things) of your original home videos to ensure what you receive on DVD is an enhanced version of the video you sent to us.
Q. Can I get VHS tapes with date stamps converted to DVD?
Yes, VHS tapes with date stamps will retain this information when converted to DVD, making it possible to reference the recording date.
Q. Can I convert videotapes to DVD myself or should I seek professional help?
You can certainly convert VHS videos to DVD yourself if you have the required equipment and software. However, this means acquiring the now vintage VCR players plus DVD recording drives (as these no longer come in most computers or laptops), which can make it very expensive. If you want to ensure the best quality while enjoying the most cost effective solution, a professional VHS tape to DVD service such as our own may be a better option.
Q. Will the aspect ratio be preserved during VHS to DVD transfer?
Yes, we will always ensure the aspect ratio will be kept to the original when converting. Please be aware, most VCR video tapes will be in the narrow, 4:3 ratio. This means you will have black sections to the left and right of your original video when watching it back on your new DVD versions. The only way to avoid this is to zoom in on the video to make it fit the commonly used modern 16:9 screens. However, this means you will cut off the top and bottom of the original video, and also lose some resolution as we’re zooming in a little. For these reasons, we stick with the first option.
Q. What steps can I take to clean and prepare VHS tapes before conversion?
Clean VHS tapes gently with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dust and debris. Ensure that the tape is rewound and properly stored to prevent damage during playback. Please do not attempt to use any home remedy cleaning methods to clean the actual tape itself - we are vastly experienced at gently cleaning old tape in order to improve the quality, so please leave it to the professionals.
Q. Can I convert VHS tapes with mono audio to DVD with stereo sound?
If the VHS tape has mono audio, it will be converted to stereo on the DVD by duplicating the audio signal across both stereo channels, providing a stereo playback experience.
Q. Can I convert VHS tapes recorded in PAL format to NTSC DVDs or vice versa?
Yes, it's possible to convert between PAL and NTSC formats, but it requires specialised equipment or software to maintain video quality and compatibility. Luckily, that’s exactly what we have at Digital Converters, so we can happily accept both PAL and NTSC video tapes.
